Jul 28 2010 | News Locals encouraged to enjoy the convenience of a “stay-cation” in Downtown El Paso.
The official hotel of the Plaza Classic Film Festival is offering discounted rooms allowing locals to enjoy the convenience of a “stay-cation” in Downtown El Paso.
The Camino Real Hotel, located directly across the street from the Plaza Theatre and the Arts Festival Plaza, is offering an $89 rate during the festival, which runs August 5th through August 15th, 2010. “We are very fortunate to have this classic, downtown icon as a corporate partner with the Plaza Classic Film Festival,” noted festival organizer and Artistic Director Charles Horak. “The Camino Real will house a Plaza Classic Lounge and is also hosting many of our film talks and the reception with Debbie Reynolds, so it’s an ideal location for accommodating attendees at this year’s Plaza Classic – whether they’re from out of town or not.”
Debbie Reynolds, a native El Pasoan, will be talking about her career in Hollywood with film historian Nick Clooney just before the August 7th screening of “Singin’ in the Rain”. Horak also said Reynolds will appear at a reception immediately following the film at the Camino Real’s Dome Bar. Tickets for the reception are $15.
About 5,000 tickets to various films at the Plaza Classic have already been sold since they were made available last week. Tickets are still available at the Plaza Theatre box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Prices range from $2.00 to $10.00, with several movies free of charge. Festival Passes are also available for $150 through the El Paso Community Foundation, (915)533-4020. |

Jun 29 2010 | News This week, organizers of the Plaza Classic Film Festival announced another celebrity appearance with the addition of actress Nancy Olson to the lineup of festival events. The Plaza Classic Film Festival, now in its 3rd year, runs August 5-15, 2010 at the Plaza Theatre in El Paso and is sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation.
Olson played the character of Betty Schaefer opposite William Holden in 1950’s Sunset Boulevard. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and was considered a prominent point in her career.
The screening at the Plaza Classic Film Festival also marks the 60th anniversary of the classic drama, which was announced as the festival’s Opening Night VIP event, according to Artistic Director and El Paso Community Foundation volunteer, Charles Horak. Prior to the screening, Ms. Olson will discuss her memories while working on this classic film with film historian and journalist Nick Clooney, on the Plaza Theatre’s stage.
“The Plaza Classic is dedicated to preserving our cinema heritage through the presentation of great films. Ms. Olson’s appearance at this year’s festival will enormously enhance the experience of seeing one of the greatest films ever made,” stated Charles Horak. He continued, “We’re also delighted Ms. Olson is scheduled to appear at a screening of her wonderful Disney film, The Absent-Minded Professor, perhaps the polar opposite of Sunset Boulevard.”
Sunset Boulevard will be presented Thursday, August 5th at 7pm, followed by the VIP reception at the Alcantar Sky Garden, the rooftop reception area above the Plaza Theatre. The Absent-Minded Professor will be presented Saturday, August 7th at 1pm. |

May 4 2010 | News This year's festival program represents a broad swath of cinema greats - from a brand-new print of The African Queen to Francis Ford Coppola's recent restoration of The Godfather; from the Technicolor brilliance of Michael Powell's The Red Shoes to the gritty black and white of the Mexican Golden Age classic, Vámonos Con Pancho Villa; From Steven Spielberg's breakout film and the epitome of a "blockbuster", Jaws, to the intense and claustrophobic Hitchcock masterpiece Psycho - the Plaza Classic Film Festival continues to gather a stellar roster of features. Gloria Swanson lamented in Sunset Boulevard, "...it's the Pictures that got small," but this year's festival will restore audiences' enchantment with great movies on a great big screen. |
