Charade Sponsored by Charlotte's Furniture 1963 | Not Rated | Comedy, Mystery | d. Stanley Donen Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau
| When Audrey Hepburn’s husband is murdered, attempts on her own life lead her to discover she’s suspected to be hiding a quarter of a million dollars stolen by her husband and his war buddies. Desperate for a way to find the money and clear her name, she reluctantly trusts her life to Cary Grant, who has duplicities of his own. But oh, that chiseled chin! The chemistry between Hepburn and Grant carries Charade through twists and turns that leave you confused about who’s who and breathless for resolution. Cary Grant’s penultimate film, directed by a master of the American cinema, Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain), Charade co-stars Walter Mathau and James Coburn. - LG | ||
Though Stanley Donen's Charade is often compared to Hitchcock (casting Hitch regular Cary Grant helped), this romantic comedy-cum-thriller is its own animal. After the death of her unpleasant husband, lovely Audrey Hepburn encounters suave but mysterious Cary Grant. Grant's arrival plunges our heroine into a world of intrigue, uncertain identities, sinister heavies (including James Coburn and a hook-handed George Kennedy), deaths in pajamas, a dryly bewildered French cop (a very funny Jacqes Marin), and a vague treasure hunt. Hepburn and Grant are a charming couple, the suspense is real, the Parisian locales luscious, and the music is by Henry Mancini himself. See it on the big screen with a loved one! - AL
