After more than a thirty year absence, THE MOVIES RETURN to The Plaza Theatre in El Paso, Texas!
THANK YOU EL PASO!
From Our Guestbook
Aug 25 2008 | News
Huge thank you to Mr. Horak and The El Paso Community Foundation (Eric). This movie festival was brilliant and beautiful beyond words. It was so amazing to watch the movies that I love in such an amazing venue. The most beautiful thing about the experience was seeing 900+ people fall in love with these timeless films. I never tired of seeing the kids and adults "ooh" and "ahh" at the light show. Thank you! I consider myself extra fortunate to have been a volunteer during this spectacular event! I, like the rest of El Paso, look forward to the next one!

The History of the Plaza Theatre to be subject of Special Presentation
Aug 8 2008 | News
One of the main purposes of The Movies Return is to celebrate the re-inauguration of the region’s grandest Movie Palace. “We’re especially pleased to have historian and film critic Cynthia Haines presenting a lecture and slideshow on the history of the Plaza (and El Paso’s theatre past) as part of our Open House events on Friday, August 15th ,” stated Charles Horak. The multi-media presentation will take place in the Philanthropy Theatre at 5:00pm and will include a wealth of information about the Plaza’s past, present and future. Ms. Haines is no stranger to the subject of historic movie theatres and is the author of Showtime! From Opera Houses to Picture Palaces in El Paso – an in-depth history published by Texas Western Press. Come and learn more about the Plaza’s incredible history and bring a copy of Ms. Haines’ book for a book-signing before and after the event. Texas Western Press will have copies available for purchase at the theatre that day.
Film Talks Added to The Movies Return!
Aug 8 2008 | News
What would a film festival be without opportunities to learn more about the films you’ll be seeing?
We’ve just added a number of Film Talks to the schedule. Join us for a pre-screening discussion of the classic films Casablanca, Singin’ In The Rain, King Kong, To Catch A Thief, Enamorada, North By Northwest, The Exorcist and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Each Film Talk will take place at 6pm in the Camino Real’s Dome Bar (right across the street from the Plaza) on the evening of the selected film. So come on over, get a cocktail and learn more about what makes these movies “classic”. We promise to get you out by 6:30pm (which just happens to be the end of The Dome’s Happy Hour).

Aug 5 2008 | News
Cricket Communications, Inc. will sponsor two movies in the Philanthropy Theatre: L.A. Confidential and Jurassic Park. "We are looking forward to the film festival, and we are happy to participate," said Biljana Blizanac, Marketing Manager for Cricket.
L.A. Confidential and Jurassic Park will be screened in the Philanthropy Theatre, a 191-seat theater adjacent to the historic Plaza.
A Giant Night Just Got Bigger
Aug 4 2008 | News
Actor Robert Nichols to be Festival’s special guest for screening of Giant.
We knew the upcoming screening of Giant on Wednesday, August 20th would be epic, but the evening’s scope just expanded further! Veteran actor Robert Nichols (“Pinky” in Giant) is confirmed as a special guest of the Festival. As Charles Horak, The Festival’s Artistic Director stated: “Mr. Nichols’ worked for over 50 years in theater, television and movies, often with some of the cinema’s greatest directors and stars. Giant is a special movie for Mr. Nichols as he had the opportunity to work with his friend Rock Hudson and share some time in Marfa with Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. We’re so pleased he’ll be joining us to tell tales of the making of this important film and his presence will make this epic movie about West Texas, even bigger.”
As an added bonus, Mr. Nichols will be on hand to present The Thing from Another World (screening Friday, August 22nd at 10am). Howard Hawk’s 1951 film about an arctic research station that’s menaced by an alien from a crashed flying saucer, was one of Mr. Nichols early movie roles and remains an important film that helped start the sci-fi craze of the 1950s.
ANIMATED SHORTS just added to the schedule!
Aug 3 2008 | News
Bogart, Hepburn and Grant will be sharing the big screen with Bugs, Daffy and Tweety!
Over 20 classic Warner Bros. shorts have been added to The Movies Return schedule. Charles Horak, Artistic Director stated: “We’re very excited to be able to offer a number of important animated shorts from the 1940s and 1950s. These “Looney Tunes” were staples at the theatre during the Plaza’s original run and usually ran prior to the feature film – and that’s just what we’ll be doing.” Look for these short films to play during the Open Houses on August 14th and 15th as well.
